What is Redman Syndrome ?
Redman syndrome which is also known as Erythroderma is a skin disease which causes severe inflammation and affects almost the entire cutaneous surface with scaling and erythema or redness of the skin.
Redman syndrome exclusively refers to exfoliative dermatitis or inflammations of the skin that arise spontaneously from an unknown or obscure cause.
Redman Syndrome Symptoms
The symptoms of Redman syndrome are as follows:
- Scaling of the skin more often starts from flexural areas. They may be reddish orange in color and usually accompanied by sever flaking of the skin.
- Presence of generalized erythema
- Increased loss of fluids from the body by transpiration which is caused due to body temperature deregulation
- Excoriations may be caused due to Pruritus
- Persistent form of Redman syndrome may cause loss of hair
- There may be thickening of nails as well as shedding and the appearance of ridges. In addition, there will be abnormal thickening of the soles and palms as well.
- Fever, malaise and chills may occur
- Chronic cases of Redman syndrome may result in severe discoloration of the skin and the appearance of white or colored patches that are spread all over the body
- There may be an excessive collection of serous fluids and swelling of the periorbital skin. This may invert or turn the lower eyelid inside out, exposing the inner surface of the eyes.
- The presence of superficial lesions or blisters.
Redman Syndrome Causes
The causes of Redman syndrome are listed below:
- Most of the cases of Redman syndrome are idiopathic
- The presence of underlying skin diseases like contact dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, seborrheic dermatitis, etc.
- It may also be caused as a reaction to drugs such as vancomycin
- An increased age of 40 years and above or if one’s gender is male, then it increases the risk to develop Redman syndrome
Redman Syndrome Treatment
- Redman syndrome may result in cardiac failure. Hence, hospitalization is required for constant monitoring purposes.
- Care should be taken to prevent dehydration and to maintain skin moisture with the help of wet tissues. Scratching and factors that intensify precipitation should be avoided.
- Medicals like topical steroids, Hydroxyzine and Triamcinolone topical are used to treat the symptoms and the condition.
- All unnecessary medications should be discontinued.
- Adequate nutrition which has ample amounts of protein intake is necessary
- Systemic antibiotics may be prescribed if there are signs of resultant secondary infections
