What is Behcet’s Syndrome
Behcet’s disease or Behcet’s syndrome is a disease that causes inflammation of the blood vessels and is characterized by infections to the ocular systems and mucous membranes. Behcet’s syndrome may also affect the pulmonary, neurological and musculoskeletal systems as well as the gastrointestinal tract.
Behcet’s Syndrome Symptoms
The symptoms of Behcet’s syndrome are usually dependant on the affected body parts. Some of the signs and symptoms of the disease as mentioned below:
- Inflammation of the arteries which supply blood to the tissues of the body. This may result in the death of the tissues causing a stroke or severe belly pain.
- Inflammation of the veins that replenish the blood-oxygen content through the lungs. This may result in loosening of the blood clots leading to pulmonary embolism.
- Inflammation of the joints or arthritis may lead to joint stiffness, swelling, pain, excessive warmth, and tenderness in the joints. Joints such as wrists, knees, ankles and elbows are most commonly affected in individuals with Behcet’s syndrome.
- Ulcers may be formed anywhere in the different sections of the bowel or stomach.
- Inflammation of the skin in individuals with Behcet’s syndrome may result in the appearance of several hive-like nodules that are reddish, tender and raised and are usually on the front potion of the legs. Patients with Behcet’s syndrome are at greater risk to develop persistent acne.
- Ulcers in the mouth and the genital area. They are painful and recur in the form of several shallow ulcers concurrently. The inner lining of the mouth, the gums and the tongue are affected by mouth ulcers. In males, the penis and the scrotum are affected by genital ulcers, whereas in females the vulva is affected.
- Swelling or inflammation of the eyes can affect either the front of the eye or the retina, which may result in blindness. It may also cause blurred vision, pain, tearing in the eyes, redness and photophobia or pain when looking at bright lights.
- Inflammation of the brain tissues that may result in headaches, fever and stiffness of the neck. Severe inflammation may lead to damage of the nervous tissues resulting in coma, confusion and impairment or weakness in the other body systems.
Behcet’s Syndrome Causes
The cause of Behcet’s syndrome is yet to be found. A strong relationship to HLA-B51 has been found, though not conclusive. The causes may be a combination of genetic and environmental factors like microbe infections. Behcet’s syndrome is understood to be not contagious.
Behcet’s Syndrome Treatment
Treatment of Behcet’s syndrome involves treating the various symptoms in the following ways:
- Cortisone gels and creams for mouth and genital ulcers.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for joint inflammations
- An eye doctor will treat the eye inflammations as per the severity level. Specialists to treat the relevant nervous and other body systems inflammations.

hi our nephew dario fernando silvera was suffering from behcet’s disease while he was a inmate at bergen county jail in nj he was feling neck pain body pain on june 2 and 3 and on june 4 jail officials took him to paramus regional hospital with severe trauma urinaring himself inconcious without mobility blind and deaf he stay in that condition for 20 days until he past away from behcet’s syndrome is paramus regional hospital the rigth hospital to treat behcet’s……do a person with behcet’s should satay in a comon cell isolated and lonly can you send us your opinions thanks
